The Vatican on Monday announced that Pope Francis' doctors have lifted his "guarded prognosis" but that the situation is still complex and he will need to remain hospitalized for the time being.

The pope's health has been rocky since entering the hospital last month, including several points where it appeared he might not survive. But in recent days, his condition has improved.

The Holy See's press office said that the 88-year-old pope's blood work and clinical findings have supported lifting the prognosis.

"For these reasons, the doctors have decided today to lift their guarded prognosis," the office said. "However, given the complexity of the Pope’s clinical picture and the severe infection present at the time of hospitalization, it will still be necessary to continue pharmacological treatment in a hospital setting for a period of time."

The news means that he is out of immediate danger, Vatican sources told ABC News.

The Vatican also said that the pope was able to receive the Eucharist on Monday morning and follow spiritual prayers. He additionally spent the day alternating between prayer and rest.
