Lee Zeldin shutters EPA museum after dismal attendance

The highest costs were for security, which would cost U.S. taxpayers $207,000 annually, and cleaning costs, which U.S. taxpayers were projected to spend $123,766.29 a year on.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin on Monday announced he is closing down the Biden administration's EPA museum that cost taxpayers millions to build, but saw an abysmal turnout in its first year.

The museum, which is located in a building just blocks from the White House, has only seen 1,909 visitors since it opened last year. The EPA said the National Environmental Museum and Education Center would also cost $600K a year to operate.

"The scarcely-visited museum cost a whopping $4 million taxpayer dollars to build in accordance with Smithsonian standards and more than $600,000 annually to operate," the agency told Fox News. "It had less than 2,000 external visitors between May 2024-February 2025 and while the museum was free, the cost to taxpayers per external visitor amounted to nearly $315 per person."

The highest costs were for security, which would cost U.S. taxpayers $207,000 annually, and cleaning costs, which U.S. taxpayers were projected to spend $123,766.29 a year on.

Zeldin also accused the museum of telling a "select history" of the agency.

"I have pledged to be an exceptional steward of taxpayer dollars, so this shrine to [environmental justice] and climate change will now be shut down for good," Zeldin said in a video on X. "I will do my part to help the American people learn more about the amazing work of our agency, to provide cleaner, healthier, and safer land, air and water.

"We will do so without paying more than half a million dollars in tax dollars on a museum that is barely visited, and designed to tell a slanted, partial story of the EPA," he added.
