Speaker Johnson swears Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine into office
The Republican majority in the House is now 220-213.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Wednesday night swore new Florida GOP Reps. Randy Fine and Jimmy Patronis into office in a short pro-forma session, boosting the Republican majority in the lower chamber to 220-213.
The two lawmakers won their respective races on Tuesday night, to replace former GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Both lawmakers were endorsed by President Donald Trump.
Patronis, who previously worked as Florida's Chief Financial Officer, said he was "honored" to represent the state in Congress, and vowed to help implement Trump's America First agenda.
"Mr. Speaker, with a Republican majority here in Congress, and President Trump in the White House, we’ve got the opportunity of a lifetime to fix this country, so that our children grow up in a nation that’s safe and full of opportunities," he said in remarks on the House floor. "’I'm ready to help get our fiscal house in order.
"As the state’s former Chief Financial Officer, I oversaw the state’s budget for nearly a decade, and know what it takes to make sure we’re growing our economy while stabilizing the budget," he continued. "I’ve always believed the people of America spend their heard earned cash better than Washington."
Fine praised Trump in his remarks, stating that he believed the president's life was "saved in Butler, Pa., so he could save the world," according to The Hill.
The ceremony comes as the House is on hiatus for the rest of the week. The chamber will reconvene on Monday.
