Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra announced Wednesday that he will run in 2026 to become California’s next governor.

Bercerra was also the state's attorney general from 2017 to 2021 before serving as the U.S. Health secretary under President Joe Biden. He also represented California's 34th congressional district from 2013 to 2017.

"As AG I took on Trump – and won," he wrote in a social media post on X. "As HHS Secretary, I took on Big Pharma – and won. It’s time to do it again for California. Let’s rebuild the California Dream for everyone."

Other candidates in the Democratic California gubernatorial primary include former Rep. Katie Porter, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who served as an attorney general and U.S. senator for the state, is still considering whether she'll run.

A poll conducted by Emerson College shows that Harris would have 57% support if she ran for governor.
