The Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Wednesday told Maine that it has frozen federal funding for the state over its failure to comply with an executive order that bans transgender people from competing in women's sports.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning biological men from competing in women's sports in February, after promising that the federal government would only recognize two sexes. The Department of Health and Human Services defines sex as a person's "immutable biological classification."

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told the state that she is freezing funds for administrative and technological functions in schools, which will resume as soon as Maine is in compliance with Title IX, according to the Daily Wire.

“Your defiance of federal law has cost your state, which is bound by Title IX in educational programming," Rollins wrote. “In order to continue to receive taxpayer dollars from USDA, the state of Maine must demonstrate compliance with Title IX’s protection of female student athletes from having to compete with or against or having to appear unclothed before males.

“USDA, alongside other federal agencies, will continue to pause and, where appropriate, terminate categories of education programming in Maine if these ... violations are not resolved to the satisfaction of the Federal Government," she added.

Rollins said the freeze will not affect federal feeding programs or direct assistance programs for state residents.

"If a child was fed today, they will be fed tomorrow," Rollins promised.
