Federal agencies have begun offering employees a second chance to accept a buyout as mass firings across the government continue under the Trump administration.

The government initially offered a sweeping buyout to federal employees to resign and secure pay through Sept. 30. The current buyout, repeats the offer, but comes directly from the respective federal agencies rather than the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), Politico reported.

Thus far, the Departments of Defense, Agriculture, Energy, Housing and Urban Development and Transportation have offered such buyouts, with tight deadlines. The Small Business Administration and the General Services Administration have followed suit.

“My intent is to maximize participation so that we can minimize the number of involuntary actions that may be required to achieve the strategic objectives,” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said of the matter.
