Apple, Google reinstate TikTok on their app stores
In January, TikTok was removed from the app stores due to a law that demanded the app divest from its China-based owner.
Google and Apple have restored TikTok on their respective digital apps store, amid a back-and-forth about banning the China-affiliated app over national security concerns.
The app was restored Thursday evening, about a month after being pulled.
In January, the apps were removed to comply with legislation signed into law by then-President Joe Biden that banned it in the U.S. until China-based owner ByteDance divested – amid concerns the company was gathering data from U.S. users and giving it to China's government.
Existing users could still see content on the app, after a brief pause. But its removal blocked new users.
President Donald Trump upon taking office signed an executive order that expanded ByteDance's opportunity to sell its stake in TikTok.
TikTok, known for its dance-routine videos, has over 170 million American users.
A spokesperson for Google confirmed to CBS News that the app had returned to the store.
Trump told reporters on Thursday that he is hopeful a deal can be made to keep TikTok in the U.S. permanently.
"We'll have to probably get approval from China to do it," he said. "I think China will be interested, because it's to their benefit, too."
