Rep. Abe Hamadeh introduces bill to mandate sanctions on Houthis backed by Iran
Hamedeh's bill, H.R.1250, would also put sanctions on groups affiliated with the Houthis, including Iran which backs them.
Arizona GOP Rep. Abe Hamadeh has introduced legislation to place sanctions on affiliates of Ansarallah, commonly known as the Houthis, as they have been re-designated as a terrorist group.
“The Biden administration’s reckless foreign policy has cost American lives in the Red Sea and countless U.S. assets," Hamadeh said Thursday. "President Trump was right to issue his Executive Order, and I am pleased to strengthen our nation’s position by introducing this resolution which should enhance global stability."
Hamedeh's bill, H.R.1250, would also put sanctions on groups affiliated with the Houthis, including Iran which backs them.
The Houthis are one of the main combatants in the ongoing Yemeni civil war and have disrupted shipping in the Red Sea amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.
President Donald Trump re-designated the Houthis as a terrorist group after the Biden administration formally removed them from the FTO list in 2023.
Hamadeh's bill is supported by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.
