Israeli military says Shiri Bibas not among four bodies Hamas returned but her two children were
Israel said the absence of Bibas' body was a violation "of utmost severity by the Hamas terrorist organization" of an agreement to return four deceased hostages.
The Israeli military said Thursday night an identification process found one of the bodies released by Hamas was not a hostage and that mother of two of the other hostages was not, as expected, included in the release.
Hamas in its release of the Israeli hostages earlier Thursday was supposed to include Shiri Bibas, her children, Ariel and Kfir, and 83-year-old Oded Lifshitz. But the body of Shiri Bibas was not among them.
The Israeli Defense Forces contacted the family of Ariel and Kfir Bibas to notify them of the boys, who were murdered in captivity in November of 2023, according to the Associated Press. But the identification process determined the female body did not belong to Shiri Bibas or any other hostage.
The military said the absence of Bibas' body was a violation "of utmost severity by the Hamas terrorist organization" of an agreement to return four deceased hostages, as part of ceasefire in their war that started in October 2023.
"We demand that Hamas return Shiri home along with all our hostages," the group also said.
Hamas has yet to responded to the accusation, amid a six-weeks ceasefire that began last month between Israael and Hamas.
Lifshitz's remains have also been confirmed, his family told the Associated Press.
“Our hearts – the hearts of an entire nation – lie in tatters,” Israeli President Isaac Herzog said on X. “On behalf of the State of Israel, I bow my head and ask for forgiveness. Forgiveness for not protecting you on that terrible day. Forgiveness for not bringing you home safely.”
Hamas is also expected to release six living hostages on Saturday. Israel is expected to release Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the hostages.
