GOP sees largest poll lead in decades for midterms, with 51% support from voters

As President Biden's job approval rating sunk to a new low of 41% in a poll released Sunday, Republicans' lead reached the largest in midterm election vote preferences in 40 years.

According to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, 51% of registered voters said they would vote for the Republican candidate in their congressional district in midterm elections if they were held today, and just 41% said they would vote for the Democratic candidate. This is the GOP's largest lead since the poll began in 1981.

The results were a part of the same survey that found 53% of voters disapprove of Biden's job performance, with only 35% of Independents approving. As for the economy, 70% of respondents said it is in bad shape, and 55% disapproved of Biden's handling of the economy.

The poll showed that 63% of voters approve of Biden's $1 trillion infrastructure bill that's to be signed Monday, and 58% approve of the $2 trillion spending package on climate change and social programs.
