AOC leads Schumer in hypothetical NY primary poll, amid Dems' dissatisfaction with Senate leader
The poll was conducted by a liberal group called Data for Progress.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez leads Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in a hypothetical 2028 New York Senate Democrat primary, according to a poll released Friday.
The poll by the left-leaning think tank and polling firm Data for Progress shows 55% of likely Democratic voters said they would lean toward Ocasio-Cortez for Senate while 36% said they support Schumer.
The poll comes amid the 74-year-old Schumer facing recent party backlash for supplying enough Senate Democrat votes for the passage of a GOP-led, stopgap spending bill earlier this month to avoid a government shutdown. The backlash has resulted in calls for Ocasio-Cortez to challenge him in the upcoming primary.
Ocasio-Cortez is a leader of the Democratic Congressional Conference's progressive wing, and since being elected to the House in 2018 has been considered one of the party's biggest rising stars.
The poll was first shared with the news outlet Politico.
The poll was conducted March 26-31 among 767 likely New York voters with a margin of error of 4 percentage points. Nine percent of those surveyed were undecided.
