Trump calls for Ukraine and Russian officials to finish peace deal: 'Stop the bloodshed'
Trump said the U.S. was still committed to helping "facilitate" the end of the war, but encouraged the leaders of both countries to "finish" the agreement off.
President Donald Trump on Friday night called for Russian and Ukrainian officials to meet and finish their peace deal that would end the years-long war in Ukraine, stating it was time to "stop the bloodshed."
The comment was made on social media as the president landed in Rome for the late Pope Francis' funeral. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff spent most of Friday working with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to further peace talks between the two countries, which the United States is helping to orchestrate.
Trump said the U.S. was still committed to helping "facilitate" the end of the war, but encouraged the leaders of both countries to "finish" the agreement off.
"A good day in talks and meetings with Russia and Ukraine," Trump posted to Truth Social. "They are very close to a deal, and the two sides should now meet, at very high levels, to 'finish it off.' Most of the major points are agreed to. Stop the bloodshed, NOW. We will be wherever is necessary to help facilitate the END to this cruel and senseless war!"
Although the president signaled that a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is coming soon, Trump expressed frustration at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier in the day for not signing a minerals deal with the U.S.
"Ukraine, headed by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has not signed the final papers on the very important Rare Earths Deal with the United States," he stated. "It is at least three weeks late. Hopefully, it will be signed IMMEDIATELY."
