Greenland’s opposition party on Tuesday night won the island's parliamentary election, in which President Donald Trump’s annexation threat and growing calls for independence from Denmark were key voter factors.

The center-right Demokraatik party, which advocates for a slower approach to independence, is leading with 29.9% of the vote, overtaking the ruling left-wing party IAInuit Ataqatigiit, according to preliminary official results being reported by CNN

“People want change … We want more business to finance our welfare,” Demokraatit’s leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen told Reuters following the results. “We don’t want independence tomorrow, we want a good foundation.”

The Arctic island of Greenland is an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark.

The U.S. has a military base in Greenland, the world's largest island. But Trump has sought to annex it in an apparent effort to strengthen the United States' geopolitical position in the region of the world.
