Senate Democrats on Wednesday said they will not support the House-passed funding bill that would delay a government shutdown for six months, and insisted on the Senate voting on a 30-day extension instead.

The House passed its spending bill on Tuesday night, in a 217-213 vote that was largely along party lines. But the legislation still needs to be approved by the Senate and President Donald Trump by the weekend.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer led the Democratic response to the bill, stating that his party needs more time to negotiate with Republicans on the annual appropriations bills, according to The Hill.

“Republicans chose a partisan path, drafting their continuing resolution without any input, any input from congressional Democrats," Schumer said in a statement. "Because of that, Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR [continuing resolution]."

“Our caucus is unified on a clean April 11 CR that will keep the government open and give Congress time to negotiate bipartisan legislation that can pass," Schumer continued. "We should vote on that. I hope, I hope our Republican colleagues will join us to avoid a shutdown on Friday."
