Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday announced that he was "proud" to move toward dismantling the Defense Department's (DoD) Women, Peace and Security program, which he described as another "woke" policy from the Biden administration despite President Donald Trump signing a bill creating it in his first term.

The Women, Peace, and Security Act (WPS) was passed in 2017, and was signed by Trump that October. However, the Biden administration did establish its own U.S. Strategy and National Action Plan for the program in 2023.

The initial act was also created by several people in the current Trump administration, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Noem wrote the House version in 2017, and Rubio introduced the Senate's, per Politico.

"This morning, I proudly ENDED the 'Women, Peace & Security' program inside the [DoD]," Hegseth posted to X. "WPS is yet another woke divisive/social justice/Biden initiative that overburdens our commanders and troops — distracting from our core task: WAR-FIGHTING.

"The woke & weak Biden Administration distorted & weaponized the straight-forward & security-focused WPS initiative launched in 2017. So—yes—we are ending the 'woke divisive/social justice/Biden (WPS) initiative.' Biden ruined EVERYTHING, including 'Women, Peace & Security.'"

The program was intended to promote the participation of women in every aspect of of overseas conflict prevention, management and resolution, according to The Hill

The White House has not publicly commented on Hegseth's statement so far.
