Amazon is denying a news report Tuesday that the online retailer plans to show website shoppers the additional costs of President Trump's tariffs on merchandise.

The denial is the latest turn in an evolving story that was reported early in the morning by Punchbowl News about Amazon's plan.

The story was apparently flagged by the White House before the start of an 8:30 a.m. press briefing, in which press secretary Karoline Levitt, in response to a reporter's question on the matter, said she spoke to Trump beforehand and that his response was, "This is a hostile and political act by Amazon."

She also said Amazon's move was not a surprise considering a 2021 report by Reuters that the tech company had partnered with a "Chinese propaganda arm."

About an hour later, Amazon said it never considered listing tariffs on its main retail site and nothing was implemented on any company site.

A company spokesperson also said the only such plan was that the team running the online retailer's ultra-low-cost Amazon Haul store has "considered the idea" of listing import charges on certain products, according to Reuters.

Punchbowl also reported that the e-commerce company is hoping to escape the blame for increased prices from President Trump's tariffs.
