Former second gentleman Doug Emhoff on Tuesday announced that he was removed from the board of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, along with members of former President Joe Biden's administration.

Emhoff, who is Jewish, has worked to help combat the rise in antisemitism in the United States, which came in part as a result of the Israeli-Hamas war that started in 2023. Antisemitism has been especially rampant in the form of anti-Jewish protests at elite U.S. colleges.

The former second gentleman slammed his removal in a statement, claiming that the board should not have been politicized. It comes after the Trump administration reshaped the board of trustees at the Kennedy Center earlier this year.

“Today, I was informed of my removal from the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. Let me be clear: Holocaust remembrance and education should never be politicized," Emhoff said. "To turn one of the worst atrocities in history into a wedge issue is dangerous — and it dishonors the memory of six million Jews murdered by Nazis that this museum was created to preserve."

Emhoff said he is still committed to educating the public about the Holocaust, and antisemitism, despite his departure. 

"I will continue to speak out, to educate, and to fight hate in all its forms—because silence is never an option,” he added.

A White House official confirmed to The Hill that some board members have been released from their spots and that the administration is currently interviewing possible replacements.  

Other Biden appointees who have been dismissed from the United States Holocaust Memorial Council include former White House chief of staff Ron Klain, former Biden domestic policy adviser Susan Rice and former Jill Biden senior adviser Anthony Bernal.
