The State Department on Tuesday rejected reports earlier this week that Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a German chancellor that President Joe Biden would miss a meeting with him in order to sleep.

Germany and the United States had arranged a meeting between Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz after the G-7 summit in Bavaria in 2022. But Secretary of State Antony Blinken allegedly went to the meeting alone and told Scholz that Biden needed to skip the meeting to get sleep, two sources reportedly told The Wall Street Journal on Monday.

The State Department said the reporting from the Wall Street Journal is "not accurate," and a source told the outlet that Biden was never expected to attend the informal meeting.

"That is absolutely not accurate," State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told Fox News. "Secretary Blinken never said that or anything like it."

The report comes as the president faces renewed scrutiny over his age and mental and physical ability to lead the country for another four years. The questions regarding the president's health have intensified after Biden gave a lack-luster debate performance last month.

Several House Democrats have urged Biden to drop his bid for reelection over the debate performance, but the president and his campaign have maintained that Biden will remain the Democratic Party's nominee.
