Watch and Listen: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport air traffic controllers during crash
As the American Eagle Flight 5342, a CRJ jet, approached the helicopter, the tower controller asked the helicopter pilot if he had the CRJ in sight. The helicopter pilot cannot be heard responding to the question before the two aircraft collided.
Audio from the control tower at Ronald Reagan National Airport reveals controllers managing multiple aircraft landing and departing the airport following the crash of American Eagle Flight 5342.
The video, which shows images from area radar, was posted by VASA Aviation, a YouTube Channel featuring clips of air traffic control (ATC) audio and radar video.
Reagan tower control had cleared the flight to land on runway 33. Jazz 789, flying from Washington to Toronto, was cleared for takeoff on runway 1, which crosses runway 33, and the controller told the pilot "no delay," meaning he was expected to execute the takeoff as quickly as safely possible due to the high volume of traffic landing at the airport. American Airlines 3130 was cleared to land on the same runway behind Jazz 789.
A blackhawk military helicopter was following the river, approaching the area where the crash occurred. The controller advised the helicopter pilot that the American Eagle flight was flying south of the Woodrow Bridge at 1,200 feet above sea level. American Airlines 1630, flying to Chicago O'Hare Airport, was then cleared to takeoff behind Jazz 789 on runway 1, and the pilot was also instructed no delay.
As the American Eagle flight, a CRJ jet, was approaching the helicopter, the tower controller asked the helicopter pilot if he had the CRJ in sight. The helicopter pilot cannot be heard responding to the question before the two aircraft collided.
The tower controller immediately advises flight 3130 to "go around," meaning the landing clearance was canceled, and the pilot was given altitude and heading instructions. American Airlines 472 was on approach to runway 1, and the controller canceled the approach clearance and told the pilot to climb to 3,000 feet above sea level.
The tower controller continued issuing instructions for pilots to go around. American Airlines 3130 was diverted to Baltimore, and American Airlines 472 was diverted to Washington Dulles, which is west of Reagan National.
Officials report that 64 people were on board American Eagle Flight 5342.
