Hamas releases eight more hostages as part of ceasefire deal with Israel
Some of the prisoners Israel is expected to release include 30 Palestinians that were given life sentences for deadly attacks against Israelis.
The militant group Hamas released eight more hostages Thursday as part of the ceasefire deal with Israel.
Israel was supposed to release 110 Palestinian prisoners, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the releases needed to be put on hold until the “safe release” of hostages was secured.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s office confirmed that the release of the Palestinian prisoners will take place later Thursday, but as of now none have been released, CNN reports.
Some of the prisoners Israel is expected to release include 30 Palestinians who were given life sentences for deadly attacks against Israelis, according to The Associated Press.
The ceasefire deal was reached in the final days of then-President Joe Biden's term.
The next part of the ceasefire deal will involve Hamas releasing 33 Israeli hostages, including women and children.
The Israel-Hamas war began Oct. 7 in 2023 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in 1,200 people being killed.
