Speaker Johnson said he doesn't second guess Trump's decision to pardon Jan. 6 defendants
"We believe in second chances," Johnson said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson declined Wednesday to second-guess President Donald Trump's decision to pardon roughly 1,500 people connected to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
"The president has made his decision," Johnson said after being asked his thoughts on pardoning those who participated in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot," Johnson said at a Capitol Hill news conference. "I don't second guess those ... it's kind of my ethos [and] my worldview [that] we believe in redemption."
The riot occurred at the Capitol the same day Congress was certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election that Trump lost.
Trump signed the pardons Monday, the first day of his second presidency.
"We believe in second chances," Johnson said, later saying it is time to move forward.
He also said House Republican are behind and united on Trump signing executive orders and will be working to advance the "America First" agenda.
"We move forward," the Louisiana Republican said. "There are better days ahead for us. That's what we're excited about. We're not looking back. We're looking forward."
