President Donald Trump is expected Wednesday to sign the GOP-led Laken Riley Act, crafted to crack down on illegal migrants who have committed crimes.

The signing date is being reported by the news outlet Politico. This bill will be the first Trump signs into law during his second term as president.

The bill originated in the GOP-led House and if signed into law would require the Department of Homeland Security to detain illegal immigrants charged with or convicted of theft-related crimes

It was drafted after the February 2024 murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley by an illegal migrant who had previously been arrested in connection with shoplifting.

The act would also allow states to sue the department for alleged failures in immigration enforcement.

The House passed the bill with bipartisan support, then sent it to the Senate, where it also was passed with bipartisan support but also with some changes, which sent the measure back to the lower chamber, slowing its arrival to Trump's desk.
