President Donald Trump on Wednesday celebrated as the Department of Justice asked to dismiss its case against former GOP Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., asserting that he had been the target of a weaponized justice system.

Fortenberry was convicted in 2022 of lying to the FBI, though a federal appeals court overturned the conviction, ruling he should have faced trial in another jurisdiction. The DOJ then brought charges in D.C., but dropped the matter this week, Politico reported.

"It is great to see that the Department of Justice has dropped the Witch Hunt against former Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, a longtime proud and highly respected American public servant," Trump posted. "Jeff and his family were forced to suffer greatly due to the illegal Weaponization of our Justice System by the Radical Left Democrats."

"Jeff’s 'case' was originally overturned by the Ninth Circuit, but the 'persecutors' would not leave it alone and, shockingly,  indicted him again in Washington, D.C.," he went on. "The charges were totally baseless. That Scam is now over, so Jeff and his family can go back to having a great life together, and be a part of our Country’s future as we MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. I am very proud of our Department of Justice, something I have not been able to say for many years!"

Fortenberry resigned in 2022 following his original conviction. At issue was his receipt of $30,000 through a California fundraiser that originally came from a foreign backer who was ineligible to contribute to an American campaign.
