GOP's Ken Buck opposes Mayorkas impeachment
Buck announced in November that he would not seek reelection in 2024.
Colorado Republican Rep. Ken Buck on Thursday indicated he would not support an effort to impeachment Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, contending that such a move lacked a valid basis.
The Republican indicated he was unconvinced of the merits of the impeachment articles the Homeland Security Committee approved earlier this week which accuse Mayorkas of "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law," among other things.
"I've talked to constitutional experts on the outside. I’ve talked to former members about the impact that this would have in the future," he told reporters. "The people I'm talking to... agree that this just isn't an impeachable offense." He further described himself as a "solid" no on the impeachment vote.
Buck has been a critic of Mayorkas's handling of border security, going so far as to compare him to Benedict Arnold in a 2022 hearing, The Hill noted. His opposition could prove decisive in a narrow vote, as Republicans maintain a thin majority in the lower chamber and House Democrats are not expected to support impeachment.
