A University of California Los Angeles professor is apologizing for suggesting a military coup to stop President Trump from further aligning the U.S. with Russia.

The criminal law professor, Peter Arenella, spark controversy Saturday when he posted on X: "At this point, my only hope for the U.S. to avoid becoming an ally to Russia is a violent resistance by our military. Tragic to say that because the military is trained to avoid any politically motivated intervention."

Trump as early as his first term, and increasingly in the early weeks of his second term, has said he has good working relationship with Russia President Vladimir Putin, whose country has long been considered one of the United States' biggest global threats.

Trump most recently has appeared to try to negotiate with Russia and much as Ukraine in an effort to end the countries' three-year-long war.

After facing backlash on X, including from one person who allegedly sent the professor's post to FBI Director Kash Patel, Arenella apologized Sunday, saying he doesn't think a military coup is a good idea and regrets "that post."

However, he also argued that some people had misread his posts, claiming he "never advocated for this option." By Monday, he appeared to take full responsibility, writing that he won't post on X "for at least a week" because of his "terminal stupidity and laziness in not editing a very misleading post."

UCLA as of Monday afternoon had not released a statement on the matter, and did not respond to a Just the News request for comment.

Arenella has a history of making anti-Trump comments on X, going as far as suggesting the president is an antichrist who puts the "last nail in the coffin of our democracy," according to Campus Reform, a conservative news website focused on higher education.
