Trump vows to give Greenland billions if the island nation becomes part of US
President Donald Trump previously stated that he wants Greenland to become a part of the U.S.
President Donald Trump said Sunday that he would "invest billions of dollars" in Greenland if the country decided to become part of the United States.
"As I made clear during my Joint Address to Congress, the United States strongly supports the people of Greenland’s right to determine their own future. We will continue to keep you safe, as we have since World War II. We are ready to invest billions of dollars to create new jobs and make you rich – And, if you so choose, we welcome you to be a part of the Greatest Nation anywhere in the World, the United States of America," he wrote on Truth Social.
Conservatives on X, including Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and CNN's commentator Scott Jennings, approved the idea.
"Self determination for the people of Greenland!" Kirk wrote. He also said Greenlanders want to be a part of the U.S. because they love Trump. "Let them decide their future."
The U.S. has a military presences in Greenland, its northernmost military installation. But Trump appears interested in increasing his country's geopolitical presence in that part of the world.
He made his most recent comments on the matter as residents of the island nation go to the polls Tuesday to pick 31 members of theior government's parliament. according to The Hill newspaper.
On the other hand, Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede previously rejected Trump's proposition to join the U.S. by saying that Greenlanders "don't want to be Americans" and that the country is "not for sale."
