Focus of Trump, Netanyahu White House meeting expected to be on Gaza ceasefire
Trump says there are no guarantees that peace with Gaza will last, Netanyahu says that----
President Trump and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are scheduled to Tuesday afternoon at the White House, marking Trump's first face-to-face meeting with a foreign leader since reelected in November 2024.
The meeting is expected to focus on the temporary ceasefire between Israel and Gaza that Trump helped to broker in January just before returning to office. The ceasefire ends on February 18.
“We’ll deal with critical issues facing Israel and our region: victory over Hamas, achieving the release of all our hostages and dealing with the Iranian terror axis in all its components,” Netanyahu said before leaving for the U.S. on Sunday.
The ceasefire has allowed for four exchanges of prisoners and hostages. However, there are challenges to a second deal, including demands from Gaza that Israel withdraw its military presence from the region and some Israeli parliament members opposing more negations until Hamas has been eliminated.
Trump has expressed that more negotiations are needed to end the conflict that began when the Palestinian-backed Hamas, which controls Gaza, launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
“I have no guarantees that the peace is going to hold,” Trump said Monday.
Trump is expected to present further plans for negotiations with Gaza to Netanyahu, including plans to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt and Jordan. The meeting is also expected to include discussion of a possible Israel-Saudi Arabia normalization deal and Iran's nuclear program.
