Democratic Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs on Friday vetoed a GOP-supported bill that would have required local and state cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal immigration enforcement efforts, preventing so-called sanctuary cities from operating in the state.

“I will continue to work with the federal government on true border security, but we should not force state and local officials to take marching orders from Washington,” Hobbs said in the veto letter.

According to the Associated Press, the bill would have prevented local and state officials from prohibiting or limiting cooperation with federal immigration officials.

Local or state officials would also not be able to block the use of federal databases for immigration-related enforcement.
