"I wouldn't have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president [if] I [thought] she was not qualified to be president. So let's start there," Biden said.

President Joe Biden on Thursday mistakenly referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as "Vice President Trump" while answering questions from reporters at a solo press conference.

The president, who spoke at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, is facing growing pressure to end his quest for another term in the White House, after a lackluster debate performance last week emphasized Biden's age and mental capabilities.

A Reuters reporter asked Biden what concerns he has about Harris replacing him on the presidential ticket, if he drops out of the race, but the president referred to Harris as his opponent former President Donald Trump instead.

"I wouldn't have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president, [if] I think she was not qualified to be president. So let's start there," Biden said.

Trump responded to the slip-up in a post to Truth Social, mockingly praising the president's mistake by stating he did a "great job."

"Crooked Joe begins his 'Big Boy' Press Conference with, 'I wouldn't have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president, though I think she was not qualified to be president.' Great job, Joe!" Trump posted on Truth Social, along with the video of Biden's flub.

A reporter asked Biden after the press conference whether he had a response to Trump using the mistake to "mock your age and your memory," to which Biden responded "listen to him."

The comments come after Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as Russian President Vladimir Putin during the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit on Thursday.
