Nebraskans with felony convictions have the green light to register to vote after a ruling from the state’s highest court on Wednesday.

The court ruled that a top election official in the state lacked the authority to declare a law that would restore voting rights for those who have completed felony convictions as unconstitutional.

The Nebraska Supreme Court ordered election officials put that law in effect quickly.

“Because the requisite number of judges have not found that the statutory amendments are unconstitutional, we issue a peremptory writ of mandamus directing the Secretary and the election commissioners to implement the statutory amendments immediately,” read the court order.
