California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday he would be suing President Donald Trump over the administration's tariffs on U.S. trading partners.

“President Trump’s unlawful tariffs are wreaking chaos on California families, businesses, and our economy – driving up prices and threatening jobs,” said Newsom, according to the news outlet Politico. “We’re standing up for American families who can’t afford to let the chaos continue.”

Newsom announced the lawsuit with California Attorney General Rob Bonta. This is the first legal challenge by a U.S. state to Trump's tariffs.

Bonta called Trump's tariffs "chaotic" and "troubling."

Trump last month announced across-the-board, 10% tariffs on dozens of countries, then days later put a 90-day pause on them as the global economy became unsteady and world leaders asked Trump to instead try reach a trade-tariff deal with them.

China is exempt from these tariffs and the president has increased them to 125%.
