A Washington, D.C., subway rider has been charged with allegedly stabbing a police officer who tried to stop him after he evaded paying the fare.

The rider was charged Wednesday in D.C. Superior Court one day after the incident, in which the officer was stabbed in the face, according to the Justice Department.

The agency says D.C. resident Erik Schleehauf, 43, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and assaulting a Metro Transit police officer while armed.

Schleehauf is being held without bond, and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday.

The incident occurred at the D.C. Metrorail's Navy Yard-Ballpark station after Schleehauf allegedly attempted to jump over a fare gate.

When the officer attempted to stop Schleehauf, he allegedly pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the officer in the face, the department report also states.

The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
