The Colorado legislature is considering a bill that would put warning labels on gas pumps, telling consumers that fossil fuels cause climate change and health issues.

HB25-1277, called the Increasing Transparency Impact of Fuel Products, requires retailers selling fuel products to place a warning label stating, “WARNING: Use of this product releases air pollutants and greenhouse gases, known by the state of Colorado to be linked to significant health impacts and global heating, respectively.”

The labels would be required on any gas or liquid produced from the processing of crude oil or liquids at a petroleum refinery, the extraction of liquid hydrocarbons at a natural gas processing plant, finished petroleum products at blending facilities, or the conversion of biomass into biofuels such as ethanol.

Retailers who fail to comply with the law would be treated under the law as engaging in deceptive trade practices and be subject to penalties under consumer protection laws. The bill passed the House earlier this month and is currently scheduled to be heard in the Senate Transportation and Energy Committee.

Over the past 100 years, as fossil fuel consumption rates grew exponentially, life expectancy has doubled, infant mortality rates fell by approximately 90%, and the number of deaths from natural disasters fell by approximately 98%
