Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday the U.S. will "move on" from trying to reach a peace agreement in the Russia-Ukraine war if progress is not made "within a matter of days."

“If it is not possible to end the war in Ukraine, we need to move on,” he told reporters before leaving Paris after talks with European and Ukrainian officials, according to CNN. "We need to determine very quickly now, and I’m talking about a matter of days, whether or not this is doable."

Trump vowed in his successful 2024 presidential campaign to end the war on his first day in the White House, but talks with both sides – on either a ceasefire or an end to the war – have thus far stalled.

Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has already met with Russian President Vladimir Putin three times this year.

Last month, Trump said he was considering putting banking sanctions and tariffs on Russia until a peace deal was made.

The two countries have been at war since 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine. The U.S. has been financially supporting Ukraine during the ongoing war. But Trump has become increasingly frustrated with the situation, which he showed in a contentious exchange with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky during a televised Oval Office meeting with him in February.
