Democrat Sen Van Hollen going to El Salvador to try to visit man at center of deportation dispute
The Supreme Court has ordered the Trump administration to work on getting Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a citizen of El Salvador, back to the U.S.
Maryland Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen is expected to be in El Salvador on Wednesday to try to check on a man who was his constituent who was deported to El Salvador.
A Justice Department attorney said in a court filing the deportation was a mistake, but the Trump administration has since disputed that argument.
"It should be a priority of the U.S. government to secure his safe release, which is why tomorrow I am traveling to El Salvador," Van Hollen said in a statement Tuesday, according to the news outlet Axios.
Whether Van Hollen will be allowed to see the detainee is unclear.
The Supreme Court has ordered the Trump administration to work on getting Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a citizen of El Salvador, back to the U.S. So far the administration has resisted the order.
El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele said he won't release Garcia back to the U.S.
Garcia was arrested and detained by ICE agents last month, for allegedly being an MS-13 gang member. He had legal status known as "withholding of removal" after a judge determined in 2019 that he would be persecuted by gangs if he went to El Salvador.
Garcia also had a history of failing to appear in court for traffic citations.
