Pope Francis dies from cerebral stroke
The pope died at age 88.
Pope Francis died from a cerebral stroke on Monday at age 88, according to the Vatican.
The Vatican said the stroke led to a coma, then heart failure.
The pope was also impacted by a "previous episode of acute respiratory failure in bilateral multimicrobial pneumonia, multiple bronchiectasis, arterial hypertension and type II diabetes," according to his death certificate.
Pope Francis was hospitalized earlier this year after catching pneumonia. Despite being in poor health, he still attended some Holy Week events around the Vatican.
