Putin announces unilateral three-day ceasefire in war against Ukraine, starting May 8
The Kremlin called for Kiev to agree to the ceasefire.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday declared a three-day ceasefire in its war against Ukraine, from May 8-11, calling for Kiev to agree to it, according to the Kremlin.
An adviser to the head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office responded to the ceasefire declaration, saying that “the ceasefire must be unconditional, because everything else is just Putin’s tactical games,” CNN reported.
The ceasefire decision was made based on “humanitarian considerations,” the Kremlin said, and the truce would begin at midnight on May 7-8 and end at midnight on May 10-11 in honor of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in Europe and the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Russia previously rejected a U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire to which Ukraine had agreed.
