Tsunami reported after massive underwater volcanic explosion in Tonga
Tsunami warnings issued across region.
A massive volcanic eruption near Tonga on Friday night generated reports of major tsunamis coming ashore as authorities issued widespread warnings following the destructive blast.
Satellite imagery showed the explosion resulting from a large underwater eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai volcano, one easily visible from outer space.
Footage subsequently uploaded to social media appeared to show the tsunami resulting from that explosion washing ashore on the island of Tonga.
The Tongan capital of Nuku'alofa was reportedly flooded by the tsunami, with the country's King Tupou VI reportedly being evacuated from the royal palace.
