Media seizes on Trump's Liz Cheney comments: Here's the full context
"You know, they're all war hawks when they're sitting in Washington," Trump said.
Legacy media have rushed to seize on comments from former President Donald Trump and present them as him calling for violence against former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., but Trump sought to make the point that Cheney was a "war hawk" because she didn't have to personally fight.
"I don't blame [Dick Cheney] for sticking with his daughter," Trump said. "But his daughter is a very dumb individual, very dumb. she's a radical war hawk. :et's put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. Okay, let's see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face."
"You know, they're all war hawks when they're sitting in Washington, in a nice building saying 'oh gee, we'll -- let's send let's send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy. But she's a stupid person," he continued.
Media outlets, however, ignored the context.
"Trump says ‘war hawk’ Liz Cheney should be fired upon in escalation of violent rhetoric against his opponents," CNN wrote.
"Trump on Liz Cheney: ‘Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her’" Politico reported.
"President Trump was clearly explaining that warmongers like Liz Cheney are very quick to start wars and send other Americans to fight them, rather than go into combat themselves," Trump Campaign National Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told the outlet.
