At least 37 die in India bus accident
A police officer said the bus was overcrowded and speeding.
At least 37 people are dead and 18 others are injured after a bus rolled down a slope Wednesday onto another road in the Kashmir region of India, officials said.
The 42-seater bus was traveling from Kishtwar town to Jammu city when it went off the road and fell about 660 feet onto an older road, according to civil administrator Harvinder Singh, The Associated Press reported.
The exact cause of the crash was not immediately clear, but police officer Sunil Gupta said the bus was speeding and overcrowded and that a formal investigation was ordered.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident "distressing" and offered his condolences on X, formerly Twitter. He also said the victim's families would receive about $2,400 and the injured would receive about $600.
