IRS to stop surprise visits to taxpayers, citing safety and scammer concerns
The Internal Revenue Service announced Monday that it is ending a decades-old policy of unannounced in-person visits to taxpayers and businesses from agency revenue officers. The decision is part of the agency’s latest efforts to ensure its employees’ safety and combat scam artists impersonating the IRS. Unannounced visits will be replaced with mailed letters to schedule in-person meetings.
