Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday dubbed himself the "father of IVF" during a Fox News town hall with women voters.

"Oh, I want to talk about IVF. I'm the father of IVF, so I want to hear this question?" he said in an exchange with moderator Harris Faulkner.

Trump then fielded a question about the prospect for abortion bans to impact access to fertility treatments. He recounted a phone exchange with Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., in the wake of an Alabama court ruling that could potentially affect access to IVF.

"I said, explain IVF. Very IVF, very quickly. And within about two minutes, I understood it. I said, No, no, we're totally in favor of IVF," he said. "I came up with a statement within an hour, a really powerful statement with some experts, really powerful. And we went totally in favor the Republican Party. The whole party. Alabama legislature, a day later, overturned, meaning approved it overturned."

"And we really are the party for IVF. We want fertilization, and it's all the way and the Democrats tried to attack us on it, and we're out there on IVF, even more than them, so we're totally in favor of it," he continued.

The Alabama legislature in March approved legislation protecting IVF providers after the court's February decision. The case itself related to the destruction of embryos used in the fertility treatment.

Some Christian denominations, including the Catholic Church and the Southern Baptist Convention, oppose IVF.
