Trump leads Biden in Michigan by 8 points: poll

Former President Donald Trump has notched an early lead in the race to claim Michigan in the 2020 presidential election, should he face President Joe Biden in a rematch.

In a head-to-head matchup, Trump led Biden by 8% with 47% support among likely voters to the incumbent's 39%, according to a recent survey commissioned by The Detroit News and WDIV-TV (Channel 4). Eleven percent were undecided while 3% preferred someone else.

Trump's lead widened in a hypothetical scenario with third-party candidates that notably excluded independent candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West. With the Green Party's Jill Stein, Libertarian Lars Mapstead, and a prospective run by former Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney under the No Labels banner, Trump earned 41% to Biden's 29%. Six percent backed Stein, 2% broke for Mapstead, and 8% preferred Cheney.

Conducted by the Michigan-based Glengariff Group, the survey found that 77% of likely voters prefer someone other than Biden to lead the country, while 17% said he deserved another term and 7% were unsure.

While a majority, 62%, of likely voters would prefer someone other than Trump, 33% said he deserved another term and 5% were unsure.

Conducted Jan. 2-6, the survey questioned 600 likely voters and has a margin of error of +/-4%.
