Trump confirms single border, energy, taxes mega-bill in the works
"Republicans must unite, and quickly deliver these Historic Victories for the American People," he added.
President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday confirmed that lawmakers were preparing a comprehensive bill to address his key proposals on energy, border security, and taxes all at once.
"Members of Congress are getting to work on one powerful Bill that will bring our Country back, and make it greater than ever before. We must Secure our Border, Unleash American Energy, and Renew the Trump Tax Cuts, which were the largest in History, but we will make it even better - NO TAX ON TIPS," he posted on Truth Social.
"IT WILL ALL BE MADE UP WITH TARIFFS, AND MUCH MORE, FROM COUNTRIES THAT HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE U.S. FOR YEARS. Republicans must unite, and quickly deliver these Historic Victories for the American People," he added. "Get smart, tough, and send the Bill to my desk to sign as soon as possible. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
Republicans maintain a narrow majority in the House of Representatives and do not enjoy a supermajority in the Senate to clear the 60-vote filibuster threshold. Any such legislation is sure to face intense Democratic opposition.
The "Trump tax cuts" from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act are set to expire and the president-elect hopes to instead make them permanent. The pairing of border and tax legislation appears to be a vehicle for pushing the more contentious security policies over the line as the tax cut provisions are generally considered more likely to pass.
