Senior Trump official Ric Grenell in Venezuela to discuss migrant crisis with foreign leaders
Grenell is expected to meet with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro
President Donald Trump's presidential envoy for special missions Richard Grenell is in Venezuela to discuss the migrant crisis with foreign leaders, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Friday.
Leavitt said at a press conference that Grenell is already in the South American country.
Grenell served as the acting Director of National Intelligence of the first Trump administration.
She said that he was directed to go there by President Donald Trump to ensure that repatriation flights of Tren de Aragua gang members, made up of illegal Venezuelan migrants, will happen without problems.
"Ric Grenell is in Venezuela to ensure that all U.S. detainees in Venezuela are returned home," Leavitt also said.
He is expected to meet with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to urge him to take back deported migrants who have committed crimes in the U.S.
This trip comes less than a month after Maduro was sworn in for a third six-year term as president.
