McConnell to be 'involved' in Montana Senate primary
McConnell also indicated he was eyeing the Nevada GOP primary and praised former state Rep. Jim Marchant, who is seeking the party's Senate nomination.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday confirmed that he plans intervene in the Montana GOP Senate primary on behalf of businessman Tim Sheehy, who faces a potentially competitive primary against Montana GOP Rep. Matt Rosendale.
"We will be involved in the Montana primary," McConnell told The Hill. Both former President Donald Trump and Senate GOP leaders have backed Sheehy for the party nod, though Rosendale's entry into the primary earlier this month has complicated his path to the party nomination.
Rosendale ran unsuccessfully against Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in 2018. His bid is likely to face an uphill battle for the party nomination in light of McConnell and Senate leadership backing Sheehy.
McConnell also indicated he was eyeing the Nevada GOP primary and praised Sam Brown, an Army veteran who is seeking the party's Senate nomination.
"In the end, you spend the resources where you think you can win, and Nevada has been a pretty close, competitive state," the Kentucky lawmaker told the outlet.
