Trump announces Donald Trump Jr will visit Greenland, continues to float buying it from Denmark
Trump claimed in a post on Truth Social that his son will take a group of representatives with him to the northern territory, and will be meeting with the locals rather than Greenland officials. The trip is currently planned for Tuesday.
President-elect Donald Trump on Monday confirmed that his oldest son Donald Trump Jr. will take a trip to Greenland soon to meet with locals as the former president floats buying the country from Denmark.
Trump most recently teased the idea of purchasing the country last month when announcing his pick for ambassador to Denmark, but was quickly rebuked by Greenland's government, which stated that the territory not for sale. Trump also floated the idea in his first term.
The controversy comes as Trump also teased expanding the U.S. by merging with Canada as its 51st state, now that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that he will resign when a new leader is elected.
Trump claimed in a post on Truth Social that his son will take a group of representatives with him to the northern territory.
"I am hearing that the people of Greenland are 'MAGA,'" the former president said in the post. "My son, Don Jr, and various representatives, will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights. Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World."
Donald Trump Jr., also confirmed the plans to Fox News, which reported that the trip will take place on Tuesday. He will be traveling in a personal capacity and is set to arrive in Nuuk, Greenland, midday Tuesday.
"As someone who has traveled to some fascinating places across the globe as an outdoorsman, I’m excited to stop into Greenland for a little bit of fun this week," Donald Trump Jr. told the outlet.
A source also told the outlet that Donald Trump Jr. will be there to film some content for a podcast.
If Trump does buy the northern territory, it would mark the largest U.S. expansion since the Louisiana Purchase.
