The official Twitter account of the Democratic National Committee on Monday tweeted, and then quickly deleted, a claim that President Trump would be "glorifying white supremacy" by hosting a fireworks display at Mount Rushmore on July 4th.

The tweet was linked to an article in the Guardian in which a Native American activist called the national monument "a symbol of white supremacy [and] structural racism."

Mount Rushmore, which features the stone-carved faces of consequential American presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt – has been criticized by Native Americans for its perceived intrusion into what the Lakota tribe considers the sacred ground of the surrounding Black Hills region.

The monument was completed in 941.
