Hockey Immortality: Alex Ovechkin surpasses Wayne Gretzky to become NHL’s all-time scorer
Russian-born star, known as the ‘Great 8," scored for his Washington Capitals in the second period of a game against the New York Islanders.
Alex Ovechkin surmounted professional hockey's mountain of immortality Sunday by scoring his 895th goal to surpass Wayne Gretzky and become the National Hockey League's all-time scorer.
The Russian-born star, known as the ‘Great 8," scored for his Washington Capitals in the second period of a game against the New York Islanders as the man he surpassed, Gretzky, watched on in adoration.
His teammates on the Washington Capitals, where Ovechkin has played for more than two decades, swarmed him in celebration, and the game came to a halt as the NHL honored its greatest scorer on national television with a special painting and celebration.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told the raucous crowd that no one thought Gretsky's record could be broken. Gretsky held the record for 31 years.
Ovechkin dove head first onto the ice in celebration as his shot soared into the net of the goal.
Ovechkin thanked the hockey fans and his teammates over the years who helped him win a Stanley Cup championship back in 2018 and climb toward hockey immortality.
"We did it boys," he said. "We did it."
Ovechkin's historic goal came in signature fashion, on a power-play and from the part of the ice in front of the net that has now become famously known as his "office."
Though his hair is gray at age 39, Ovechkin is enjoying one of his greatest seasons ever with 42 goals and his team sitting atop of the Metropolitan Division of the NHL.
