Motive remains unclear in shooting death of 5-year-old North Carolina boy

Police have yet to explain the motive behind the shocking killing of a five-year-old boy in Wilson, North Carolina last week, though the boy's neighbor has been arrested on a first-degree murder charge related to the case. 

Cannon Hinnant's father said last Sunday that after hearing a loud bang and coming outside of his house, he discovered his son—who was shortly due to begin kindergarten—lying shot in the front yard. 

Austin Hinnant said he observed his next-door neighbor, Darrius Sessoms, pacing the yard over and holding a gun. Sessoms shortly fled the scene, after which paramedics arrived to assist Cannon. The five-year-old later died at a local hospital. 

The Wilson Police Department later announced that Sessoms had been arrested, charged with first-degree murder, and held without bond. Police have not yet revealed a motive for Sessoms's alleged killing of the young boy. 

Austin Hinnant has told media that invited Sessoms over for drinks the night before. He said he had observed Sessoms sitting in his car "like he had a lot on his mind."

"I was trying to do something nice," Hinnant said.
